that is unrelated - but Erik Spiekermann is the freaking master - even if he is kind of a prick in interviews. I guess it goes with the territory. I think I've mentioned it before - check out the documentary "Helvetica" if you haven't already watched it. Really amazing.
Like the best graphic designers, the top shelf typographers are not constrained by the modern tools that have helped given a boost to "modern hacks" like myself.
My personal favorite new-school typographer is Christian Schwartz. His fonts like Chalet and Neutra are far from a handwritten source, but really beautiful.
